ART

The rate of bomb incidents has fluctuated in recent weeks.

During the past wock those incidents have continued on a reducod

scale but have been marked by the use of more powerful devices.

The comparative calm of the border area has continued and has been

broken only by one or two minor stoning incidents and by the

occasional planting of hoax and real bombs. The reduction in the

scale of terrorist activity may be related to the opening today of

the Canton Trade Fair, but nevertheless the Communist Press has

continued its virulent anti-British propaganda. Police action has

continued, mainly in connexion with the arrest of persons planting

boobs. There are no indications at present that the local Communists

intend to abandon their campaign of violence, but there are indications

that they ney become more selective in their choice of targets. Food

supplies from Chine have continued to enter Hong Kong at a satisfactory

lovol.

The above information may be given to the Canadian Prine

Minister.

Border Talks

All details of the current border talks with the Chinese frontier

officials are being kept secret for fear of prejudicing their outcome.
