the major hotel facilities with all its related service areas in the most func- tional and economic means and to in- clude in the project a large shopping arcade area.
'The banquet hall, grill room and the room service facilities are consider- ed as part of the major facilities. And so these areas are designed around the main kitchen, with the kitchen pivot- ing on the central core of the hotel tower. Services to and from the kit- chen may be made throughout the hotel without a direct conflict with the public areas.
'The main hotel entrance is placed on the second floor, with a rampway approach, so dividing the hotel area function from the shopping area."
Accommodation
The Dusit Thani is sited adjacent to Bangkok's Lumpini Park and is bound- ed on the north-east by Rama IV Road and on the north-west by Silom Road. The site is flat and covers approxi- mately 27,470 sq. metres.
Total building area is 61,780 sq. metres, of which the podium and hotel tower block take up 37,624 sq. metres and an office building and car park 24,156 sq. metres.
The accommodation includes: 500 guest rooms (twin bedrooms and suites), banquet hall, exhibition hall, theatre, two cocktail lounges, grill room, coffee shop, supper club res- taurant, Thai restaurant, entertain- ment bar lounge, swimming pool and terrace, shopping arcade and indoor car park.
The tower block takes a triangular form on plan and tapers slightly to- wards the roof to create an impression of greater height. It is set on the po- dium mass to take on the monumental quality which was the architect's aim.
Its shape and finishes make it a visually exciting building from any angle. Shadows from the horizontal lines of balconies at each floor level contrast with the all-white wall sur- face, and colour is introduced in the gold aluminium partitions to the na- tural anodized aluminium handrails and window sashes. Gold and green mosaic tiling is used on the podium facades.
Internally wide use is made of marble-spray for ceilings, glass mosaic and ceramic tiling and teak wood panelling in public areas. Floors are carpeted.
The structure is entirely of rein- forced concrete, the central lift and staircase core being slipformed. It is founded on 23 metre prestressed piles.
