The monumental Dusit Thani

"THE building is designed upon a hexa- gonal module to achieve a harmonious and organic space. A hotel building with numerous facilities must have de- sign consistency and a flow of space without obstruction'.

This is architect Yozo Shibata's brief outline of his basic plan for the luxurious 500-room Dusit Thani Hotel opened in Bangkok earlier this year.

'My approach', he says, 'from the earliest stages of design conception to final completion was to retain a tro- pical atmosphere within the podium block and to reflect in the tower block the monumental design qualities of Thai pagodas.

'The enclosed courtyard is designed in three distinct areas the pool ter- race, water fall and the lower garden to achieve a counter balance volume of space to the main lobby area. The ban- quet hall foyer is made larger in
