quirement of over 150,000 cu.yd., almost two-thirds is being precast in a large casting yard of some 750,000 sq.ft. (65,000m2) set up nearby. The manufactured parts include 95 miles (153 km.) of concrete piles. Number- ing some 7,000, these are of up to 110 ft. (33.5m) in length and 24 tons in weight.

Pile driving is now at its peak, at a rate of over 100 a week. The first was driven in June, 1969 and the total at mid-August this year was over 2,500.

A hazard recently discovered, wrecks on the sea-bed at 20 ft.(6m) depth, was overcome by blasting holes in the vessels through which the piles could be bored.

The bulk of piles are of hollow prestressed concrete and are manufac- tured using two pile spinning plants. By means of the spinning process, the compaction of the concrete attains high efficiency. Water/cement ratio is reduced to between 0.30 and 0.35 so that, with the use of steam curing, concrete strengths of over 4,500 lb./sq.in. are achieved in under 18 hours, allowing the prestressing wires to be released and the moulds re- moved.

Some 1,500 normal reinforced con-

crete piles with square cross-sections are also being manufactured.

Wharf deck

The wharf deck has been designed for rapid erection by use of the stand- ard precast units, consisting of precast prestressed beams spanning 21 ft. 6in.

21ft. (6.5m) set on cast in-situ pile caps. Precast prestressed soffit planks are provided for the deck and an in-situ topping gives continuity to the deck structure.

Prestressed concrete beams and units for the deck slab are being made on six 220 ft. (67m) prestressing beds. Pile rock shoes, fender units and duct covers are also cast in the yard,

all units being moved to the construction area by truck.

An in-situ concrete berthing beam and transverse beams will be construct- ed at the face of the wharf to accept the berthing forces which will be trans- mitted into the structure.

Plant and equipment

Two 6 ft. square (0.5m2) service ducts will also be provided along the wharf face to accommodate full tanker bunkering facilities.

Piles are handled by a comprehen-

sive layout of portal cranes which cover the manufacturing yard. Trans- port to the area of construction is by rail on bogies drawn by diesel loco.

Of the plant and equipment used, some $5.5 million worth has been brought in from outside the area. One of the pile frames used, 120 ft. (36.5 m) high and mounted on a 120 ft. span gantry, was specifically made for the contract by the British Steel Pil- ing Co. Ltd. Hollow piles are driven by a 12-ton single acting BSP hammer and solid piles by an 8-ton hammer.

Other large plant items include two G75 tower cranes and a Babcock Marion 43 MB lift-crane from Babcock and Wilcox; five electric derricks of up to 30-ton capacity with 150 ft. (5.7m) long jibs from Butters Cranes, and eight portal cranes of up to 140 ft. (42.6m) span and 60 ft. (18.2m) hook height, from Keienburg's, Essen. Among other items are new diamond saw machines by Sandyfords, Dublin for trimming the tops of the hollow concrete piles.

Construction began in 1969 and during this summer employment has reached a peak of about 600, including some 540 local employees and sub- contractors.
