footing system contributed much to the economy of the scheme. For a simple, effective external finish, the architects used band sawn timber strip formwork to give an architectural con- crete, or fair-faced, finish on all ex-

ternal structural members. Infil panels are plastered and painted, while accent colours highlight the soffits of exterior staircases and concrete fins. The audi- torium roof is painted green to mini- mise glare to the classrooms over-

looking the roof from the tall block of the school.

Inlayed brick strips break up the expanse of the concrete paving in open areas. The environment of the school is further enhanced by lawns and landscaped areas where planting is carried out by students.

The school, the first buildings to be started in a formerly barren district, took nine months to construct. The building cost for the school block was approximately HK$2.00 per cu. ft., and for the auditorium block, HK$1.95 per cu. ft.

The total building cost was about HK$1.9 million

an average of about HK$29.00 per sq. ft. with a further HK$113.000 being spent on movable furnishings.
