Thus the entrance is not only the major point of public contact, but is also a focus from which all depart- ments radiate. By leaving free ends, and by grouping accommodation that is unlikely to change in function near- est the centre, radical extension is possible.
The isotope handling area is, for in-
stance, in the main block, but labora- tory space is in a free-standing building to the east, with virtually unlimited space for expansion. Similarly the changing and waiting areas for radia- tion therapy are immediately off the entrance hall and space due north, cut into the existing slope, is available for extension if required.
In addition to the present ward block, piling and stub columns have been allowed for the addition of a future block of 100 beds over the physics section. Space is available to the north-east for the addition of low hotel-type wards.

been planned for easy conversion to house a cobalt unit if ever required and the radium laboratory has been sited to provide implant material direct to a large operating theatre when constructed to the east of the present minor operating theatre.
Sterile supplies, except for theatre instruments, laundry and food are to be provided from the main complex and chilled water for air-conditioning and steam for hot water and sterilising are piped from a central plant area. Only current records and those peculiar to this speciality are held by the unit, general records being held by the central records department.
