to be built in the New Territories to alleviate the shortage of secondary school places there. They are expected to cost a total of HK$5.4 million.

The four-storey secondary school at Yuen Long, com- prising 18 classrooms, will provide places for 690 pupils and will be capable of expansion by addition of six class- rooms at a later date. It will be situated in the New Yuen Long Town layout area adjacent to the new District Office and Police Station Building.

TWO PROJECTS IN TAIWAN

MANILA architects, A. J. Luz Associates, are designing two projects in Taipei, Taiwan a multi-storey apart- ment block and a 14-storey hotel.

The apartment block, in the centre of Taipei's re- sidential district, will contain 55 two- and three-bedroom dwellings above ground floor shops. The structure will be of reinforced concrete, with prestressed concrete joists. and concrete floors and roof deck.

The hotel will house 100 suites, each with a balcony. It will include a ground floor shopping arcade, restaurants, lounges, conference halls and a roof-deck swimming pool. On top of the structure will be Taiwan's first revolv- ing restaurant, providing views of Taipei and the Formosa Strait.

44-ACRE PARK IN TA KWU LING

WORK on the first phase in the development of a vast 44-acre park in the Ta Kwu Ling area of Kowloon, Hong Kong, is expected to begin in November. The new park will be the largest of its kind planned by Government for Kowloon and the New Territories.

Facilities to be provided in the first phase include a model boat pool, an illuminated fountain, a roller skat- ing rink, retreat areas, terraces, children's playground, a refreshment kiosk, plant nurseries, surfaced paths, and public conveniences. A feature of the project is that the superstructure removed from the old Blake Pier will be incorporated in the layout as a bandstand and covered sitting area.

The site of the new park. formerly occupied by a rifle range, is surrounded on all sides by high density development including the Wong Tai Sin, Wang Tau Hom. Lo Fu Ngan and Tung Tau Resettlement Estates where an estimated 500,000 people are living. The park is designed to meet the serious lack of turfed playing pitches for New Kowloon generally and to provide children with some of the facilities not already planned in the smaller children's playgrounds in the neighbourhood.

The first phase of the project is expected to be com pleted by the end of May next year.

ATLAS LIGHTING AWARD

MR. Simon Sin-Ming Kwan is this year's recipient of the Atlas Lighting Award in recognition of his being the top student of the Department of Architecture at the Uni- versity of Hong Kong. The award takes the form of free air travel to Britain as guest of Atlas Lighting Ltd.

Mr. Kwan, aged 25, was educated at Queen's College, Hong Kong (1956 1962) and later the University of Hong Kong. Apart from being this year's award winner. he also gained the Hong Kong Society of Architects' Silver Medal Design Competition. 1965. He is chairman of the Hong Kong University Art Club and vice chairman of the Architectural Society.

A selection of Mr. Kwan's work was displayed at the Hong Kong Trade Exhibition held at Selfridges, London, during September.

POWER STATION SITE CONTRACT

A TWO-ACRE site in the Jurong industrial estate is expected to be cleared within the next four months for the M$180 million Jurong Power Station.

The Public Utilities Board has awarded the contract for excavation and preliminary civil engineering works to Hong Guan Construction and Engineering Co. Ltd.

The contract covers general site excavation, construc- tion of site roads, service crossings, monsoon drains, pipe outfalls, storage areas, car parks and temporary drainage works, construction offices and canteen, at a total cost of M$1.35 million,

The new power station will have an eventual capacity of 480 MW.

A.I.A. BUILDING WINS AWARD

THE first of a series of district offices of the American International Assurance Co. Ltd., built in Penang more than three years ago, has won the Royal Institute of Bri- tish Architects (RIBA) Bronze Medal Award.

This building was selected after nominations had been sent in from all over Malaysia for buildings con- structed during the period 1961 to 1963 inclusive. The architects. Palmer and Turner, will receive a bronze medal presented by the RIBA, together with a diploma, and a suitable tablet will be affixed to the building.
