1973, the four estates will house over 180,000. Work was started last month on another three blocks and an estate school of a fifth estate at Kwai Chung - the Kwai Fong Estate. In October, work will begin on another three blocks.
Kwai Fong, when fully completed at a cost of about HK$40 million, will provide homes for 42,500 in multi-storey blocks from seven to 20 storeys high. There will be four primary schools with 96 classrooms and three kindergartens to look after the educational needs of children living in the estate.
ECAFE reviews housing problems
The ninth session of the sub-committee on housing, building and planning of the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) was adjourned recently at ECAFE Headquarters in Bangkok.

New Cockpit Hotel extension
The eight-day meeting reviewed the progress made in the field of housing since the committee met last and at the same time considered the report of the sixth meeting of the advisory committee of the regional housing centres, which had concluded snack bars, parties room, bar-lounge and 144 bed- its deliberation earlier.
Other important items which the sub-committee discussed were the subjects of urban planning and development; a regional planning manual to describe housing's scope and content; the construction in- dustry; and technical assistance activities from the United Nations.
Indoor stadium proposed for Hong Kong
Sketch plans for an indoor stadium suitable for large conventions have been prepared by the Public Works Department of Hong Kong. Announced in a Legislative Council meeting, the Director of Public Works, Mr. J.J. Robson, said the stadium would have a capacity for 15,000 and would be built over, and in conjunction with, the Tsim Sha Tsui Railway Terminus when that was moved to Hung Hom.
The stadium can be used for holding large con- ventions since the intention is to air-condition it. Although it has been designed primarily as a sports centre, it will also operate as a self-contained convention centre.
Work starts on hotel extension
Construction work on the 12-storey extension of the Cockpit Hotel in Singapore has already start- ed on its property adjoining the New Penang Road.
The project, costing about $$7 million, is ex- pected to be completed by June next year and will be directly accessible from both Oxley Rise and Penang Road.
The extension has been classically architectured to reflect the character of the existing Georgian style buildings and to avoid the harsh lines of so many modern structures.

Work on a swimming pool has begun and when completed it will serve the resident guests of both the old and new buildings. A garden terrace will be a feature of the snack bar to project the image of a 'garden hotel' situated in the heart of the city. Architect in charge is Mr. Yang Tai Tye.
HK$750 million reservoir
To meet future water demands, the Hong Kong Government has planned another Plover Cove type reservoir which is estimated to cost about HK$750 million.
The proposed reservoir will be formed by building dams at the east and west ends of the narrow sea passage separating High Island from the south coast of the Sai Kung peninsula, New Terri- tories. The capacity will be about 50,000 million
