Malaysia gets more Australian prefabricated bridges

The Australian Government announced recently it will give more assistance to the economic deve- lopment of Sarawak, Malaysia, amounting to about A$865,000 over a three year period from 1969-71.

Eight prefabricated steel bridge structures for erection on a road from Juching to Miri in north- west Sarawak will be designed in Australia and

can photograph many memorable views of the six of them will be supplied by Australia. The exposition.

Malaysian authorities will finance the two bridges for which Australian design assistance only is needed.

Another feature of the pavilion will be two brightly coloured towers of smaller diameter. One will rise 88 ft. above the ground floor and will con- tain three floors of exhibit area while the other will be 28 ft. high. Each of these towers will have six sides, painted alternately red, blue and yellow. Construction on the pavilion, located on a 105 ft. by 164 ft. site close to the main entrance of the exposition, began last November. Total expenditures on the pavilion and its exhibits will amount to about US$1.5 million.

The architectural and design concept of the pavilion was by Granz Johann Schwenk, a Kodak design architect. The co-architect and contractor was Toda Construction Co. Ltd., of Tokyo.

Colombian Pavilion at Expo '70

Unusual triangular construction will highlight the Colombian Pavilion at Expo '70. Designed by Colombian architect Carlos Depuy, the pavilion is being built by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Taisei Con- struction Co., Ltd., both of Japan, and is scheduled to be completed in January 1970.

The pavilion theme will be "Simplicity and Harmony". The triangle design was adopted to point up the several outstanding 'triangle aspects' of Colombia. Among these are the three pillars of her political system, the three main periods in her

The supply of these bridges follows the design and fabrication of 10 bridges for the road between Simanggang and Sibu, at a cost of about A$1,375,- 000. These were given as a contribution to a road construction programme for Sarawak under Malay- sia's First Development Plan.

Hong Kong to start work on big road scheme

Work will begin in October on widening a sec- tion of Upper Albert Road, forming part of the Garden Road Complex - biggest and most com- prehensive road scheme designed by the Hong Kong Public Works Department to improve traffic flow in the busy Central area.

The widening of Upper Albert Road between Garden Road and Albany Road will be effected by the construction of a retaining wall along the north side of the Botanic Gardens. It will provide additional carriageway width to allow space for the later construction of two flyovers linking Upper Albert Road with Kennedy Road.

Major contract to Hong Kong company

A large contract for the manufacture, installa- tion and glazing of all windows for the second stage of the Mei Foo Sun Chuen housing project at Laichikok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, has been awarded to Petman Limited, manufacturers of architectural aluminium products.

Aluminium windows, utilizing design features ideally suited for Asian conditions will be used on the project which has more than 300,000 sq. ft. of window area requiring over 14,000 aluminium window units. Mei Foo is the largest project of its type in South East Asia to use entirely alumi- nium windows. In fact the HK$400 million project is the largest private housing development of its type in the world.

When completed within the next few years it will house approximately 80,000 people in sur- roundings comparable with the finest available in Europe and America for projects of its type.
