NEW WAREHOUSE
IN WEST POINT,
HONG KONG
Photograph of the south and west elevation of the completed building.
When international trading in Hong Kong got up to its most busy stage, the shortage of godowns or warehouses became a very serious problem in business circles.
To meet the requirements for additional storage areas, 3 modernized and spacious godown was recently completed in the West Point district for the Shanghai Commercial & Savings Bank, Ltd. The site is located at the corner of Catchick Street and Smithfield Street on M.L. 243, Sec. A. S.$.1, and in that old business district the new building stands out distinc- tively in the middle of a group of ancient and decrepit struc- tures with which the district abounds.

Detail of the interior, showing structural design.
On an area of nearly 5,200 sq. ft., this godown was designed with five floors of clear storage spaces, averaging about 4.200 sq. ft. each.
The construction of the building is of reinforced concrete framing, with 9" and 131" brick or stone walls. All interior columns, except those on the ground floor, were designed round so as to make full use of the storage area.
The reinforced concrete floor slabs are treated with metallic hardener, and the roof is constructed of hollow blocks covered with cement tiles.
All windows are of steel sash with wired glass provided for maximum light and safety.
For fireproofing purposes, each floor can be isolated by self-closing doors of heavy teakwood with asbestos lining. A fire-escape stair at the rear of the building accessible to all floors is provided for emergency use.
A specially designed chute, running from the second floor down to the ground floor, enables the discharge of large packages of goods to be made directly from each floor to waiting lorries with the minimum of handling.
Plumbing and electrical mains are all concealed in internal ducts. On the roof a circular water-tank and lift motor room in one tower has been incorporated into the architectural design of the building.
The total cost of the building is $670,000.00. Work was commenced on the building on 28th July, 1949, and was completed in August 1950.
The design is by G. D. Su, B.S.A., A.A., of the Hsin-Yieh Architects.
