HONG KONG PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Summary of Progress for October, November & December, 1950,
ARCHITECTURAL OFFICE
New Residence of Hon. Colonial Secretary-Carcase of the main building and servants' quarters was completed,
Albany Road Flats Working drawings were being pre- pared.
Proposed New Secretariat & Government Offices General sketch plans and elevations were completed, Detailed sketch plans for the Secretariat were completed and those for the east wing were awaiting approval of offices concerned. Plans and elevations were forwarded for consideration by the Arts Council.
Offices & Quarters for Revenue Department-Working drawings were completed and contract documents were being prepared.
Extension to Government Store for Medical Department---- Contract documents were prepared and ready for signature.
H.K.D.F. Headquarters-Working drawings for the main building were being prepared. Work commenced on rehabilita- tion of the Old Civil Service Clubhouse for conversion into Quartermaster's Store, this work was being done on the main- tenance schedule,
Police Stations-The Kowloon City Police Station and the Tsun Wan Police Station were both completed during the month of November. Sketch plans for the Sha Tau Kok Police Station were completed and forwarded to the Commissioner of Police on 20th October, but no reply was received.
Work progressed satisfactorily on the Asiatic Police Quarters, Hollywood Road. Working drawings were com- menced in November on the Canton Road Police Quarters but, owing to staff shortages, were stopped.
Miscellaneous-Contract for the Radio-Sonde Station at King's Park was signed on 18th December. Drawings on the Road & Weather Station, Waglan, were completed. but no approval to carry out the work had been received,
No further progress has been made on the New Kowloon Fire Station, as the new site had not yet been fixed.
Work on the Kowloon T.B. Clinic was completed on 20th December, while working drawings and contract documents were being prepared for the New Wards, Kowloon Hospital. Contracts for the Health Offices, To Kwa Wan and Aberdeen, were signed on 17th November, and work was progressing very satisfactorily.
Contract for the Kowloon City Market was signed on 22nd November; while working drawings for the Hunghom Market were completed and contract documents were being prepared.

120 Domestic Permits were issued for 58 European type houses: 131 Chinese type houses; 2 staff quarters; I additional storey: a block of 16 flats; 2 hotels; and 1 temporary lepers' but on IL. 1572 Victoria Road.
64 Non-Domestic Permits were issued for 28 temporary sheds; 4 godowns: 3 stores; 2 factories; 3 service stations; 3 garages; amusement park; 2 cinemas; 2 churches; 1 parochial hall; 3 office buildings; 1 aluminium rolling mill; 1 school, etc.
72 Dangerous buildings notices were served affecting 133 houses: 76 notices affecting 81 houses were served under Sections 104 and 126 of the Buildings Ordinance, 1935; 170 notices affecting illegal structures. 209 Inspections and reports were made in regard to structural stability of premises to be licensed by other Departments; while 140 tests and inspections of drainage system in various districts were carried out.
CROWN LANDS & SURVEY OFFICE
During the period under review, 44 applications were received for purchase of Crown Land, including extensions to existing lots, exchanges, grants, etc. 6 Lots were sold by Public Auction realising a sum of $571,300.00; and 13 lots were sold by Private Treaty realising a sum of $2,518,410,00. Extension of time for completion of Building Covenants was granted on
46 lots, fines being imposed in each case. New Crown leases were granted in respect of 6 lots; 10 lots were granted in exchange; extensions granted to 3 lots; and 3 free grants made. 315 permits were issued for temporary leasing of Crown Land, the total annual fee amounting to $148,643.00.
DRAINAGE OFFICE
General maintenance work proceeded satisfactorily: 1027 choked sewers were cleared on the Istand and 1088 on the Mainland. Repair works to nullahs, sewers, culverts and anti- malarial works totalled 261 on the Island and 63 on the Mainland.
In connection with works contingent on land sales, foul and stormwater sewers were extended to a total of 5428 feet to serve land now being developed.
Foul and stormwater drainage works required for the North Point reclamation were carried out as necessary. Out- line drainage schemes for Lai Chi Kok reclamation were prepared; also a drainage system for proposed working class flats at North Point, a scheme for culverting Argyle Street nullah, and drainage works at Kai Tak etc.
Works executed on private account included 142 foul and stormwater sewer connections, and extensions of sewers totalling 2008 fl. were laid.
ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL OFFICE
In the Electrical Section. 890 jobs were completed, 92 installation tests made, 1690 faults repaired, 144 electrical installations were in hand, and 170 estimates were prepared.
The Mechanical Section reported that 6 Ford 11-ton chassis were received from Harper & Shea Ltd. The con- struction of Police Troop Carrier type bodies for these vehicles has been contracted to a local firm of auto body builders. Land Rover was received from Reiss. Bradley & Co., Ltd. for the Police Force, and 2 Excelsior Light Motor Cycles were received from the Crown Agents for the Gardens Dept.

A total of 5,547 jobs were completed by the workshops during this quarter. The construction of the building for the new Lubrication Bay has been completed by the Architectural Office, and the lubrication equipment is expected to arrive from U.K. in the near future. A new vehicle wash bay has been constructed and equipped with high-pressure washing plant.
PORT WORKS OFFICE
In addition to the normal repair, reconstruction and reconditioning works carried out on various piers and sea- walls, all work on the Shamshuipo Ferry Pier was completed, and Contract No. 66 of 1950 for extending the 1st class waiting area of the Jordan Road Ferry Pier was awarded to Wan Hin & Co., work to commence early January.
The total quantity dredged by two dredging units at Proserpine Reef, Tai Kok Tsui, Taikoo Dry Dock Entrance and Causeway Bay Harbour of Refuge, amounted to 58,858 cu. yds.
In connection with reclamation work, public dumping at North Point and Hunghom continued, with a total of 18,746 lorry loads dumped at the former and 3.731 loads at the latter. All works in connection with Contract No. 71 48, excepting the bringing up of the rubble mounds at North Point and Kun Tong, have been completed. Marine borings over area to be reclaimed at the east end of Connaught Road Central (H.M. Dockyard to Queen's Building) have been completed, and the design of steel sheet piling wall and temporary piled platform was prepared.
The construction of North Point Sea-wall. west of Q.B.M.L. No. 4, commenced on 11th October.
The survey of 4 permanent piers in Kowloon, 1 in New Territories, 1 in Hong Kong, and I temporary pier in Kowloon for renewal of leases and annual permits, miscellaneous hydrographic surveys setting out positions for boring work, and surveys on the movements and subsidence of Aberdeen Sea-wall, Taxi-track at Kai Tak Airport and Repulse Bay Beach were carried out.
9 Marine bores were carried out at the east end of Connaught Road Central, 43 at Ma Tau Kok and 16 bores at Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter to investigate the foundations for proposed reclamations.
At Kai Tak, normal maintenance was carried out. Con- tract No. 33 of 1949, "Bituminous Surfacing to Kai Tak Runways" was completed, and the resurfacing of the Taxi- track was executed under the current Maintenance Contract.
