Work starts on HK$3.5 million flyover

CONSTRUCTION began last month on a new flyover at one of the busiest road junctions in Kowloon Princess Margaret Road/Gascoigne Road/Chatham Road. The contract, worth HK$3,439,869, has been awarded to Paul Y Construction Co. Ltd.

To be known as the Chatham Road flyover, it will join Chatham Road with Princess Margaret Road by means of a four-lane carriageway supported on piled foundations across Cascoigne Road. The flyover will measure about 1,000 ft. in length, including ramps.

The scheme will enable north-south traffic to

cross the junction without interruption. To provide for the traffic flow between Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom, Kai Tak and the north-eastern part of Kowloon, free flowing slip roads will be incorporated into the project. East-west traffic will remain at ground level and will be able to flow freely along Gascoigne Road and Chatham Road crossing the road junction under

On Hong Kong island a section of Gloucester Road between the east end of Harcourt Road and Luard Road is to be widened as part of the scheme to form a waterfront road linking Central District with North Point. This section of Gloucester Road will be provided with a dual three-lane carriageway with an 18 ft. wide service road on the south side so that commercial vehicles can have access to properties on the landward side of the road without hinderance to the main traffic flow.

In addition, a flyover and two pedestrian foot- bridges will be built across the widened roadway. The flyover will link the new road with Arsenal Street while the footbridges will be built opposite the Arsenal Street Police Headquarters and near the Luard Road junction.
