'El Chi Middle School, the first subsidised Chinese secondary school in Kwun Tong, has been built to help meet the urgent need for school places in this highly developed industrial and residential area Kowloon.

It caters for a full student enrol- ment of 1,200 and contains 26 class- rooms, together with 12 special rooms for chemistry, physics, biology, gener- al sciences, needlework, woodwork, art, geography and music. Ultimate- ly the school will operate 30 classes from Form 1 to Form 6, of which four will be floating classes. Extreme flexibility and the maximum utilisa- tion of outdoor space for student activities were two essential require- ments of the client's brief.

Faced with restricted site of 55,500 sq. ft. and a strictly limited budget, the architects have yet man- aged to achieve this flexibility and to coalesce the different elements of the school building.

Integration of outdoor and indoor spaces are stressed in the design; each classroom is provided with through ventilation and access to all rooms is made through balcony approached corridors and open staircases.

Where there are no access balconies on the facade, as on the front of the main classroom block, sun protection is by horizontal sun breakers and a deep roof overhang. This design fea- ture gives the building a clean roof line.

Stoping site

The site is bounded on two sides by Shui Ning Street, which rises some 16 ft. along the lot boundary. Ad- vantage is taken of this topography by sinking a basketball court 7 ft. below the main ground floor level. The accommodation is arranged around this court in two six-storey blocks forming an L-shape on plan.
