was carried out by heavy rolling with an 8-ton power roller both on the formation and on the hardcore bot- toming before the heavy-duty con- crete floor was laid.

Portal spans

The owners called for a factory or printing floor of about 60,000 sq. ft. and a raw materials store of about the same area. This has been achieved by providing a layout of six portal spans, each of 80 ft., in bays 250 ft. long and 20 ft. high to the portal springing. With mezzanine levels the actual floor areas are 62,000 sq. ft. for printing processes, 60,000 sq. ft. for newsprint and raw materials storage, plus 7,000 sq. ft. of office space and the works

canteen.

The construction is a standard type steel portal frame with brick gable ends, Naco louvre-type windows and low level concrete air vents. The main frontage is clad with Robertson pro- tected metal in a blue colouring.

Portal columns are encased in con- crete and the rafters have a plaster- board and fibreglass covering to give a two-hour FOC rated fire protection. A large school premises overlooks the site from the higher levels, so a non- reflecting aluminum Alachromed roof sheeting was used.

Throughout, the fire protection is to the fullest FOC rating and the whole premises is covered by a sprink- ler system linked to the nearest fire station and roof smoke vents operated by fusible links.

A 'fire break' between the factory area and the materials storage has been achieved by building two 9 in. brick 'skins', 6 in. apart, with the openings protected by two-hour fire doors on each side of the wall structure. The fire doors are also operated by fusible links.

In the factory area the underside of the roof is treated for acoustic and insulation purposes with a suspended ceiling of Armstrong Minaboard 4 ft. x 2 ft. tiles in aluminium suspension following the roof line.

The factory area is ventilated by
