The photographs on these pages are of the recently com- pleted residence on Island Road, which was described in considerable detail as Residence “A” on pages 9 and 10 of the January-February 1949 issue of this magazine. Floor plans
and two views of the model of the residence were included in that issue and it is a credit to the builder of the model, Mr. S. N. Li, that he has been able to make same as closely re- sembling the finished residence as can be seen by comparing the photos in the January-February issue with the photograph of the completed residence shown above.
The completed residence has come up to the full ex- pectation of the owners and the architect, and the pooled ideas of the owner and architect that went into the planning of the house have resulted in a very charming home, with many un- usual and attractive features. Due to the very careful con- sideration given to orientation and through draught, the house is very cool, and it has proven unnecessary to employ the cen- tral air-conditioning plant which, however, has been provided for and was described in our previous article.
The use of rough dressed granite blocks inside and out in contrast with stucco and plaster has proved a very pleasant feature and is particularly pleasing on the study and living room fireplace walls. The fireplace nook with its window seat terminating at one end in the specially designed teakwood radiogram cabinet, which houses radio, record-changers, tape and record recorders and ample storage space for records, makes a very cosy conversation nook.
The large sliding doors of living room and dining room have proven very satisfactory, the view through which," out to sea, is spectacular.
Mr. Harper's hobby being "home movies", a work room has been provided for film edition and splicing. This room is situated off the study and separated from the latter by "Fold- wall" partition which when closed conceals the work room completely, eliminating the necessity of putting away para- phernalia between operations.
Special thought has been put into the designing of the bathrooms and kitchens and have resulted in very handsome rooms which are, at the same time, completely practical,
a fireplace pack which forms part of the living rOOM.
