It has often occurred to us to wonder why on earth such a sterile term as "modern" has been used as a period identi- fication for the countless variations of designs of buildings which have been erected all over the world since about 1910.
The designation, "Modern Style", has been applied to every type of design which could not be identified by certain prominent features linking them with preceding periods, whereas in point of fact it should be used only in connection with designs of buildings which reflect positive qualities identifiable with the spirit of the modern era.
In this sense the term "Modern Style" can very definitely be applied to a private residence which has recently been completed for a well-known businessman of Hong Kong, Mr. A. G. Dalziel, to the design of Mr. K. Smith-Mitchell of the Architectural Department of the Metropolitan Land Co. The feeling of spaciousness, which is one of the inherent qualities of modern designs, is obtained chiefly by the cantilevered balcony covers and the wide overhanging canopies which enclose and protect so much of the outdoor areas immediately surrounding the house.
