Wong House building in Des Voeux Road West was carried out in difficult and dangerous condi tions seldom met in the Colony.

The site. located in one of the oldest sections of Hong Kong Island. is surrounded by ancient houses in an extremely dilapidated condition. These houses have no foundations worth mentioning and Franki Piling and Engineering (H.K.) Ltd. who carried out the piling contract. found that it was mainly the support they gained from each other that kept them erect.

To make room for the new build- ing. three of these old buildings had to be demolished. Consequent- ly. the adjoining houses. now un- supported. showed immediate signs of weakness. The one on the right hand side was a particularly bad case and extensive shoring had be carried out to prevent the front side from collapsing into the street. Between the adjoining buildings. fly shores were put up across the site of Wong House.
