TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN

THE HONG KONG & FAR EAST BUILDER-VOLUME 18. NUMBER 6

The blocks marked A, B and C represent the older Bank flats.

appliances in a 20-storey block of flats. Appliances of simplified con- struction allow compact installation; for instance, for full space heating and hot water service, the appliances can be installed inconspicuously with in a cupboard occupying 2 ft. x 2 ft. of floor space or within a pile duct.

The system saves construction materials and labour and there is a corresponding gain in free floor space.

The system, including appliances such as air heaters and drying cabinets is inconspicuous both out- side and inside the building. Ter- minals are mounted only 12 inches above a flat roof and inlets are often located within the building or flush in an outside wall. Its appliances have no flue equipment such as draught diverters and secondary flue pipes and are consequently simpler and more elegant in design than con- ventional appliances and less ob- trusive when installed.

Internal rooms without special provision for air supply for the functioning of the appliances can be included in a plan.

The Se-Duct is made of

a light. weight Fondu cement concrete mix. and in Hong Kong, produced under licence by Doran Brothers Ltd. The sections are simply stacked one on top of another, and a rebate joint sealed with a lime cement mix. A forming the size of the Se-Duct is left in each floor slab, and a special section with a concrete flange each side is used at each floor level to support the weight of the Se-Duct.

on

During building the Se-Ducts are installed in pipe service ducts, and the heaters are usually built into the wall of a utility area. Each heat- er can supply hot water to the kit- chen and washing troughs in the utility area. At Luso Apartments six Se-Ducts, each of nine floors high, are being installed in pipe service ducts. Heaters will be fitted into a bathroom wall. so that only five inches of the enamelled outer case of the heater will project into the bathroom. Ia both these installations. the bottom of the Se-Duct is in the ceiling of an open ground floor space.
