A $1 million swimming centre in
Kuala Lumpur designed to fulfil all requirements for social exercise and yet be suitable for international meets, including Olympic Games competitions. is to be established in the Federal capital.
Tenders have been invited for the construction of a large swimming pool, smaller diving pool, a child- ren's wading pool, changing rooms and restaurant for the centre which is to be completed later this year.
A municipal project, the centre is designed by the Municipal Architect, Mr. S.P. Chow. B.A., B.Arch.(Hons), A.R.I.B.A., and will be on
a five acre site off Weld Road.
Cutting and filling in site works have been kept to a minimum as the centre is designed on several levels.
On the road level will be a car park for 100 cars. On gradually ascending levels will be a children's playground and wading pool and the swimming and diving pools, chang- ing rooms and a restaurant.
In designing the centre space is being allowed for future pavilions. clubhouse and restaurant.
The site is ideal for swimming pools. The two pools will be of the
flush-decked modern type with water reaching to the top of the sides and overflowing into open scum channels.
The swimming pool will be 50 metres by 30 metres, rectangular in shape and from 3 feet 6 inches to 7 feet deep. With a width of 30 metres, water pool can be played in this pool. The pool will be entirely tiled and have a promenade of con- crete non-slip slabs.
Lighting for he pool will be by special underwater fittings on the sides of the pool. There will be a total of about 50 of these lights to ensure even illumination of the whole pool. For competitions, moveable raised starting blocks will be provided.
The diving pool will be 64 feet by 55 feet, also rectangular in shape and having an all-round depth of 17 feet. It will also be lit underwater. It is the first of its kind in Malaya
a pool solely for diving.
Existing pools in Malaya are for swimming and diving with often a wading pool attached to the shallow end.
The diving stage of this pool will be in three stages. The first diving stage is five metres from the ground; the second, seven and a half metres,
