Swimmers, however, although we have some of the finest beaches imaginable, are not quite so fortunate. The beaches are terribly crowded these days and the rapid progress which Hong Kong has made com- mercially during the past few years has seriously affected our swimming clubs.

The old Victoria Recreation Club, even with its small pool, had been used as a venue for swimming races but with the building of the central reclamation, its premises had to be sacrificed to the cause of progress with the result that for the past few years competitive swimming was confined to one or two Chinese swimming clubs at Kennedy Town with very primi- tive facilities in the open waters of the harbour, or to the restricted confines of the Ritz Club. This latter pool is now the site of a huge block of apartments to be erected on its grounds.

Government which has done so much to cater for sporting and field events by the construction of the new Hong Kong Sta- dium at Sookunpoo, has gone one step further and is to build a modern swim- ming pool at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. This public swimming pool is being designed not only to provide recreational and training facilities for swimming en- thusiasts, but to include amenities for the
