Kowloon fire station will cost HK$7.6 million

A NEW fire station, costing more than HK$7.6 million, is to be erected in Tsim Sha Tsui to co-ordinate the activities of the fire services in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Occupying an area of 72,000 sq. ft. in the Old Naval Camber in Canton Road, the station will replace the existing Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok fire stations. It will comprise a main building of 14 storeys with two wings of four to five storeys, three single storey build- ings and a training tower.

The design is such that the station may be divided into seven sections district fire headquarters, prin- cipal fire station, workshops, stores, fire boat accom- modation, staff quarters and officers recreational area. The main building will house the Kowloon Command Headquarters, dormitory, officers' quarters, canteens, a recreation room, library and auxiliary fire services club.

Room for ten fire engines will be provided in the section for the principal fire station which will include a drill yard with a training tower, a gymnasium and an ambulance mobilisation control room. The buildings will take up just less than half of the 72,000 sq. ft. site; the remainder will be used as a compound.

Construction of the new station, designed by the architectural staff of the Public Works Department, will begin later this month and is scheduled to be completed early in 1970,

Housing Board place S$5 million contracts for flats

THREE contracts worth a total of almost $5

million have been placed by Singapore's Housing and Development Board for the construction of 1,673 flats at Toa Payoh, Queenstown and Bukit Merah.

The largest, worth S$2,460,330, is for contract III of the Toa Payoh Neighbourhood 1 and provides for two 11-storey blocks of three-room flats and shops and two 11-storey blocks of one-room flats. There will be 1,025 flats, 12 shops, one eating house and two dustbin compound-stores.

At Queenstown's Neighbourhood II extension one 16-storey and two 12-storey blocks of three-room flats will be erected with shops on the ground floor. The 424 units will cost $$1,516,000.

One 16-storey block of three-room flats and shops with living quarters (total 224 flats and shops) will be built at Bukit Merah Redevelopment, contract 17, at a cost of S$809,100.

The Board is now inviting tenders for a further 1,008 flats and 68 shops with living quarters in North Bridge Road/Crawford Street.

Multi-storey car park for Central Hong Kong

A MULTI-STORY car park to accommodate 900 cars is to be constructed on the central reclamation near Rumsey Street, Hong Kong. The piling contract, worth HK$547,340, has been let to Franki Piling and En- gineering (HK) Ltd.

A start will be made later this year on another fire station and ambulance depot in Waterloo Road, Kowloon, on the site of the former mortuary and clean- ing building. This will be a ten-storey structure hous- ing four fire engines and 50 living quarters for officers and men.

Philippines longest bridge

CONSTRUCTION work began recently on the P$30 million Mandau-Opon bridge in Cebu, which at 860 metres will be the longest in the Philippines. The con- tract has been awarded to V.C. Ponce Co. Inc.

The project, providing an essential link between the international airport at Mactan Island and the rest of Cebu mainland, will be carried out in two phases, the first of which will include a six kilometre access road, approach spans and substructures.

Pools contracts awarded

CONTRACTS for the construction of two large swimming pool complexes at Kwun Tong and Li Cheng Uk, (Far East Builder, April 1968) were signed last month between the Hong Kong Government and Goodman Corporation (Engineers and Builders) Ltd.

Work is starting immediately and the pools will be ready for use next year. Each project includes eight pools of various sizes, capable of accommodating 5,000 bathers at a time.

Cost of building

Cost of new building work in the colony during March was HK$41,050,215, while

a total of HK$872,965 was spent on site formation work. In the same period 88 new buildings of all types were erected. This total includes four factories and godowns, eight offices and shops, 67 houses and flats, and nine other buildings of mixed accommodation.
