Bid to improve architectural training in Malaysia

THE linking of the School of Applied Arts in the Mara Institute of Technology and the School of Build- ing and Town Planning of the Technical College, Kuala Lumpur, is proposed by the Malaysian Institute of Architects which hopes to raise Malaysian architectural training to a more professional level.

MIA president, Inche Hisham Albakri, said last month that the decision to link up would be up to the two institutions but the MIA would be willing to play a part in initiating the talks. The MIA had been asked to help establish professional standards for archi- tectural education in Malaysia.

Both institutions, he said, now ran architectural courses up to intermediate level. By pooling their re- sources they might provide the staff, syllabus, library facilities, finance and high entrance qualifications neces- sary to achieve international recognition in the pro- fession.

Start on nine-storey building in Bangkok

A FOUNDATION stone laying ceremony was held last month on a site at Rama IV Road, Bangkok. where a new nine-storey building is to be erected for Udom Vidhya Co. Ltd., distributors for Olympia typewriters.

The 20 million baht building is being financed partly by Olympia Werke AG of Germany, who will provide a long-term loan for half the construction. Due to be completed within 14 months, the building will contain a typewriting school, showroom, ware- house, service centre and offices.

Architect for the project is Mr. Thavorn Boon- yaketu, with Mr. Sutta Nakaket acting as structural engineer. The general contractor is Visarut Construc- tion Co. Ltd.
