CRAIG I
A new era in the history of broadcasting in the Far East opened with the introduction of Rediffusion into Hong Kong. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Rediffusion is a system of wired broadcasting which takes its programmes direct to the listener's home by wire at low cost. The programmes include all classes cf music, world news, recorded and live entertainment originated in the studios and a choice of the best programmes from all the world picked up by a receiving station.
The subscriber is provided with a loudspeaker, a volume control and a selector switch, which enables him to choose between two programmes, one in English and one in Chinese, which are provided simultaneously from 7 a.m. to midnight.
Rediffusion started broadcasting in Hong Kong in April 1949 and in the seventeen months since the opening, more than 40,000 subscribers have been supplied with the service. No other Rediffusion operation in the world has forged ahead at such a rate. The management of the Hong Kong operation points out that there is an obvious reason for this success— the fact that more than HK$7,000,000 has been spent in pre- paration, development and provision of a service that provides programmes of entertainment, news and education that are easily comparable to those presented by the world's leading radio stations. It is not generally realized that such a huge sum of money has been spent on this new enterprise in Hong Kong.
In Singapore and Kuala Lumpur additional large invest- ments have been made in similar operations and still others may materialize in Penang, Bangkok and other cities in the Far East.
In Great Britain, homes representing nearly 3,000,000 listeners receive their programmes by broadcast relay, in Holland more than half the homes in the nation are served by similar operations and wired broadcasting systems are now operating in many countries throughout the world.
There are few people in Hong Kong who are not now Inmiliar with Rediffusion. It is estimated that very nearly
