Rule 12 (a).

The surface of every floor shall be made non-porous so that water cannot pass through.

Rule 13. Floor Openings

No openings through any floors shall be allowed except to admit steam, gas and or water pipes, and iron or earthen- ware tubes for electric conductors....................... and for staircases and hoists of which the enclosure is constructed entirely of brick and or concrete at least 8 inches thick, or of reinforced concrete at least 5 inches thick, devoid of cavity......

Rule 14. Roofs

Roofs shall be constructed only of the materials approved for floors in Rules 10 (a) and 10 (b), and the total thickness of solid material shall be at least 3 inches at all points.

Rule 15.

Any joists, girders, or framework in or supporting the roof must be of metal protected in accordance with Rule 18.

Rule 16. Linings and Ceilings

No lining of wood or textile fabric is allowed to any part of the walls, including partition walls, ceilings or roofs except..... for decorative panelling and ceilings in offices, flats and dwellings, and for dados not exceeding 6 feet in height, of non-resinous hard-wood in staircases, passages and or salesrooms not used for storage purposes.

Rule 17. Protection of Structural Metalwork

All stanchions and columns shall be completely encased with brickwork or terra-cotta at least 4 inches thick, or with concrete at least 2 inches thick......

Rule 18.

All girders, joists, lintels and all other structural metal- work shall be completely encased with brickwork, terra-cotta, or concrete at least 1 inches thick, the whole being efficiently bonded and secured together.

Rule 19.

Provision must be for expansion in metal frame buildings, and in composite buildings space must be left at the ends of girders and joists to permit of expansion.

Rule 21. Flues and Ducts

All ventilation ducts shall be built of brickwork or reinforced concrete not less than 4 inches thick, and shall have openings in one storey only.
