It was finally decided that a long strip of ground on the east side of Blue Pool Road, which was steep and most unattractive from a builder's point of view, might be used for this purpose. Although the development of this site would entail considerable expense, owing to the difficulties of the site formation work, it was felt that the cost would be justified be- cause the expense, spread over the number of flats that would be re- quired, would ultimately be a fairly reasonable one. Since it was the only available site fairly close to the stables the possibilities were thoroughly explored and, as a result of negotiations with Government. Mr. S. E. Faber proceeded with the draw- ing up of the plans for seven build- ings, six for residential purposes and cne for a primary school for 280 children.
The site is long and narrow and rises 60' 0" along Blue Pool Road with a cross slope of about 33 de- grees. Planning was complicated by the presence of tunnels formed in 1941 for air-raid shelters. Five of these have been backfilled, but one remains through the site. Two exist- ing ventilation shafts had to be left undisturbed. As far as possible the blocks were arranged to miss the tunnels.
access
Because of the steep cross slopes. blocks are designed to rest against the hillside and additional steps will be formed in the spaces between. Every floor will thus have two entrances and, in no case, although the buildings are up to eight storeys, will any flat be more than four floors from the road entrance.
