The economic boom which followed the rapid influx of population into Hongkong immediately after the war permitted the rapid rehabilitation of most industries and of non-commer- cial activities such as clubs and

associations.

Racing has always been a very popular sport and from time im- memorial has gripped the interest of. and given pleasure to, all sections of the community. In Hongkong the Jockey Club is a non-profit organiza- tion and a public institution in the fullest sense of the word, any sur- plus each year being distributed amongst charitable institutions and various projects for the public benefit.

The tremendous popularity of the sport in post-war years has overtaxed the facilities and accommodation both for the horses and training per- sonnel to such an extent that an almost continuous building program- me has had to be planned and car- ried out. Provisions for the improv- ing of amenities for the public patronizing the Race Course, for the convenience of the greatly increased staff of mafoos, trainers and all other personnel engaged in the activities of the club have engaged the atten- tion of the stewards for some time.
