HE FEDERAL HOTEL which pioneered the establishment of big hotels in Kuala Lumpur (it was built in time to accommodate guests to the Malayan Independence cele- bration in 1957) is embarking on a $6 million extension project to help cope with the demand for more rooms consequent on the advent of Malaysia.

The project, designed by architect Mr. Leung Ching Fan. formerly of Hong Kong. includes

an 18-storey

block which will go up behind the existing 10-storey building of the hotel.

There will also be another build- ing. of six storeys which will be- come a recreation centre, offering a bowling alley, ice-skating rink. family cabanas and a swimming pool.

Construction of the buildings will begin as soon as the plans have been approved by the local authori ties. The whole project is expected to be completed within 18 months.

These are the details of the build- ings in the projects which will be laid-out on a two acre site:

The 18-storey block is a reinforced concrete structure which will provide another 400 rooms for the hotel.

Main problem facing the architect obtain maximum use of space provided. He did this by spacing columns. by use of internal bedrooms which therefore neces- sitated the use of an air-well from the fourth to 15th storey.

Basement of the new building will be some 20 feet below the ground level of the present building. In it will be placed the air-conditioning plant. a sub-electric station, boilers and a laundry plant.

The ground floor will be open, and will contain the lobby. coffee room. bar. barber shop. beauty saloon and writing room.

There will be

a grand staircase from the ground to the first floor, made of timber and in contemporary style.

The first floor will house the shop- ping arcade. providing a grand vista of airline offices. travel agencies, souvenir and gift shops.

The second floor is for conven- tions. This is a particularly useful facility in Kutale Lumpur where conventions are now held regularly throughout the year.

The conference room on this floor will accommodate 200. It will also have its own lobby. On this floor too will be the hotel's main kitchen for Western cuisine.

The third floor is for an interna- tional restaurant consisting of at least 20 private dining rooms. Each room will be decorated in the style of a country and will not only serve food of the country but also have its waiters and waitresses dressed for the part.

All these three floors are wholly connected to the present building. but from the fourth to the 10th. floor connection between the two will be by "bridges”.

From the fourth floor upwards are a variety of hotel rooms ranging from ordinars single bedrooms and double bedrooms to suites and a luxurious penthouse.
