THE O

GR

A typical native house in North Borneo. This house is that of a Bajau native of the Kota Belud area of the country and is made, as is common, with a thatched palm roof and split bamboo walls. It is raised on stilts above the ground to give protection against sudden floods and also to allow the breeze to flow under the house and cool it down. In the foreground can just be seen a typical log footbridge.

In complete contrast, low-cost houses built by Jesselton Town Board for rental or purchase. Tenants pay a rental of M$40 per month and after a fixed period of years the houses are transferred to them. Designed by a local architect, Mr. George Chin, the houses were all rapidly taken up.
