NEWEST addition to the build ings in Singapore's historic Fort Canning area is the dignified two-storied headquarters in the modern manner for the local branch of the British Red Cross Society at the corner of Fort Canning Road and Penang Lane. The building was opened by the Yang di-Pertuan Negara of Singapore on 5 Septem- ber 1961.
Area of the site, which is leased from the Singapore Government, is 28.100 square feet and the attractive building on it. designed by Mr. Ho Kok Hoe (of the office of Ho Kwong Yew and Sons), covers 5,540 square feet, leaving a large area for car parks and as a drill area for mem- bers of the Society.
Foundations of the building are based on 1.810 bakau wood piles. On the ground floor is a spacious reception hall, a large multi-purpose room and a big store room designed to be used in emergency as a tem- porary first-aid room.
On the first floor are the adminis- trative offices, a director-cum-meeting room, a kitchenette and a hall which will be used for meetings and for charitable shows.
Construction of the building is of reinforced concrete framework infill- ed with 4inch brick walling. Floors generally are of reinforced concrete with a cement rendered finish.
