TWO MAJOR HOUSIN
TWO major housing schemes, un- dertaken by private enterprise, are now under construction in Ipoh, the rapidly expanding state capital of Perak, Malaya, for the middle and lower income groups.
These two are among the biggest of several smaller schemes in differ- ent parts of the town, aimed meeting the growing demand for proper housing from the town's population of 200.000.
The two schemes are the Chateau Gardens, intended for the middle income group and the Merdeka Gar- dens for a lower income group. Both have been designed by Mr. Liew Why Hone, an Ipoh architect.

Chateau Gardens is located in Kampar Road which is fast develop- ing into a major residential area of the better type. It is on about 100

acres of land which was formerly covered with rubber trees and be- longed to the late millionaire miner Mr. Eu Tong Sen.
A private syndicate purchased the property, cleared and levelled the land, and cut it up into 191 lots of varying sizes. ranging from quarter- acre to half acre and one acre. An additional 24 shophouse lots, each 25 feet by 75 feet, have also been prepared, to provide the shopping
centre.
Already built on the site are the town's latest Chinese restaurant, the Golden Jubilee, with large air-con- ditioned and non-air-conditioned din- ing halls and an air-conditioned night club, with spacious car park, a large Chinese monastery dedicated to the worship of the Nine Emperor Gods and a Chinese school, with large playground.
Internal and approach roads, all metalled and tarred, and a drainage system have been laid to sections of the scheme on which the houses have been built and these services will be extended as the built-up area expands.
Water and light mains have been brought in. All these facilities are included in the cost price of land and house. The houses under construc- tion are of two types, type "A" being larger than type "B". The pattern for both types is identical. the dif ference being only in total floor area.
The syndicate has fixed the basic price for quarter-acre land and house of the "B" type (covered floor space 1,614 square feet) at M$25,500. The larger type of house and bigger plots of land will be more, depending upon
