DUE for completion by the end of October, the Empress Hotel, on a 7,000 square feet site at the junction of Chatham Road and Mody Road, Kowloon, rises for seventeen storeys on what was pre- viously a residential area of double storey houses.

Maximum development of the site has been achieved by the architects, Associated Architects (John P.C. Ho in charge), by building to the greatest possible height under the ordinance without set backs on any level. On the Chatham Road side the balconies to the individual rooms are staggered for three purposes; to fit the site, to give a better view from the rooms, and to give variety to the facade For this reason the lines of the ba conies are not carried round the corners, giving a cleaner finish to both elevations.

The ground floor will be given over entirely to hotel business, shops being provided in the basement shop- ping arcade and on the mezzanine floor, access to both of which will be by lifts and stairs.

Fourteen floors are occupied by hotel bedrooms, giving a total of 168 rooms. Rooms on the four top bedroom floors are so ar- ranged that they can be transformed into suites of any required size. A typical double bedroom is 14 feet by 18 feet and has attached bathroom.
