The 17-storey United Chinese Bank Building to be erected in Des Voeux Road Central will be a worthy addition to Hong Kong's growing number of imposing, ultra- modern banking premises.
A joint ownership scheme
pro-
bably the first of the kind in a major office building in the Colony
will operate in the new premises. Seventy five per cent ownership is vested in the United Chinese Bank and the balance is held by Madam Lee Chan Shi, who is the wife of Mr. Lee Iu Cheung, proprietor of Lee Yu Kee Ltd.
Removal of the bank to com- modious new headquarters repre- sents a personal triumph for Mr. S.K. Yee, the founder and manag- ing director. It is only 11 years since he began banking operations.
Best known among overseas Chinese as General Yee
he was made a general in the National Chinese Army in 1931 when only 28 years old and as a former member of the Kuomintang politi- cal hierarchy in China, Mr. Yee first started an import-export busi- ness in Hong Kong in 1946, after leaving the army. Two years later he extended his operations banking.
