BIG BUSINESS In Sydney, New South Wales, indoor gardening. which five years ago was regarded as a rather unnecessary kind hobby, has become big business. especially among women. The hob- by has developed. it is said. into a business with a A£1.500,000 a year

turnover.

It is estimated that 50 percent of Australia's 750,000 city dwellers who lack any outdoor garden space have one or more potted plants of their own. Women. particularly those going daily to business, have become quite keen indoor gardeners. It is actually a form of interior decorating and of bringing nature. indoors at the same time. Scarcely a new building or office is built in Sydney without having special pro- vision for indoor plant growing.

The biggest tropical indoor plant producers in Sydney are sending agents to the Philippines, the United States of America, Japan, India and Africa to bring back new species. An indoor plant producer in the Sydney suburb of Ashfield sells, each year,

an average of 200,000 philodendron cordatum pot plants for a few shillings each. He has four acres of glasshouses run by a permanent staff of 15 men and women. Each week he sends big consignments of philodendrons in- terstate in plastic pots.
