RESIDENCE WITH AN ENVIABLE LOCATION Architect: Lee Yin Chuen. Consulting Engineer: Ping K. Ng. Landscape Architect: Kwong Yeu Ting. house is scheduled to be completed

An enviable site is occupied by a very large residence nearing com. pletion for Hong Kong soliciter. Mr. M. K. Lam. on an isolated hill- side overlooking Deepwater Bay and Aberdeen Channel.

Situated about 320 feet above sea level on Brickhill and with a sweep- ing view of the surrounding water- ways and sea up to an angle of 120 degrees, the residence is also expect- ed to remain the only one on the hill because of the precipitous nature of the rest of the undeveloped land. It is undoubtedly a prize location.

Building on a virgin site of this nature presented many problems. All public utilities have had to be laid on at the owner's cost. Com- mencement of the job without power or water presented special headaches. too. to the contractor. However. these have been overcome and the

soon.

The total cover area of the build- ing is about 6.823 sq.ft. The whole property occupies nearly 30,000 sq. ft. achieved by combining Island Road Lot RBL 94 and RBL 119.

On the 1st floor there is a master bedroom, with attached bathroom and study, and five bedrooms with bathrooms and built-in wardrobes. A dark room has been included for the owner. who is a keen amateur photographer.

On the ground floor. the living room covers 32 ft. by 50 ft. and the dining room 32 ft. by 34 ft. For these two rooms Mr. P.K. Ng, con- sulting engineer has designed a 18 in. thick hollow tile slab ceiling spanning over 32 feet to obviate any projecting beams.

The ground floor also has a guest room, a bar, a card room and a joss room for family worship.

There is an exceptionally large kitchen with pantry. The servants' block contains five small rooms, two bathrooms, and a servants' kitchen.

In keeping with the surroundings, spaciousness has been emphasised in the entrance by raising glass walls from ground to roof level. The staircase looks almost independent. revealing only a single support at the half landing.

Again, in justice to the site, special attention is being paid to the gardens. Mr. Kwong Yeu Ting the landscape architect, has prepared

three split-level layout, which hinges around an extremely pleasing curved path that leads nearly 200 feet to the end of the garden, look- ing seaward.
