As a result of the increased staff and the release of certain quarters for the use of local staff, The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd. have found it necessary to provide additional staff quarters. The existing site at Cause- way Bay is not suitable for extension and at the same time it was decided to dispose of the property in King's Road, which contains the recreation club.
Consequently, in October last, an area of 213,000 square feet on Tai Hang Road (Inland Lot 7423) was put up for auction by the Crown Lands Office and the Company obtain- ed this magnificent site to the north of Jardine's Lookout. The upset price was $1.709.600 and the purchase price $2,600,000. This land, in a locality where the Company had already some residential accommodation, was ideal for the dual purpose of erecting a further thirty staff flats and an adjoin- ing clubhouse. The extensive area would provide ample room for recrea- tional facilities. In view of the very irregular nature of the terrain, a considerable amount of landscaping would be possible.
