CULTURAL HALL IS CENTRAL

BUILDING IN KUALA

HE new Dewan Bahasa dan Pus- taka (Language and Literature Agency) building in Kuala Lumpur, another of the civic buildings which are rapidly changing the aspect of the Federation of Malaya's capital. is now approaching completion.

Architect of this eighty-foot high, six-storey building is Mr. Y.T. Lee: consulting engineers were Steen Sehested and Partners; and the general contractors were the Liam Trading Co.; all of Kuala Lumpur.

The new building is on a triangu lar site bounded by Airport Road.

and was bought from the Selangor State Government at a cost of SM91.000. Cost of the entire build- ing, including air-conditioning, lifts and other equipment will he ap proximately SM1,200,000.

Design of the building is in the form of a T. with the main adminis- trative block occupying the cross stroke of the T and the auditorium and cultural hall, an important fea ture of the building, filling the longer downstroke. In all the floor space provided totals 67,329 square feet. Boundary of the site will be a four feet high fence of flowering shrubs strengthened by chain link fencing.

The cultural hall or auditorium is a single storey building raised on piers above a covered court. It is to be equipped so that it can be used for theatrical productions, films shows, exhibitions and conferences. In one wing of the stage is a special- ly equipped room for the use of Radio Malaya so that direct broad- be made of functions which take place in the hall.

The hall will accommodate about 1.000 with the seating so arranged that it is quickly flexible in order that full use of the hall can be had for whatever type of function is to be held in it.
