original pattern of artificial light sour- ces across a ceiling. The polished acrylic light sources are coloured, suspended and shaped to design and then artis- tically arrayed.

The advantages of the system are the interchangeability of low cost stan- dard parts, the use of fire-safe, light- weight plastic materials and the ease of integrating sound, heat, air condition- ing and sprinklers.

Two basic designs, illustrated above, have been introduced and a free bro- chure with layout templates for each design is offered by the manufacturer, United Lighting and Ceiling Corp., 513 Independent Road, Oakland, Calif., USA.

SEALING LACQUER

A synthetic lacquer for sealing con- crete floors, primarily to prevent them giving off dust, has been developed by Stanleys (Stafford) Ltd., Warton Road, London, E.15.

Oxan oil, which is brushed on to the floor after the concrete has dried out completely, prevents water pene- trating the screed and resists damage from oil, petrol and other chemicals. It also eliminates the dust normally produced by a cement or concrete floor and gives a gloss finish which is smooth but not slippery.

The lacquer, unaffected by heavy machinery, dries in about six hours and has a spreading capacity of 10–16 sq. yd. (8 14 sq.m) per litre for one coat. Two or three coats are usually

necessary.

ROAD SIGNS

New glass-fibre road signs from Pearce Road Signs, Ltd., Imperial Works, Old Hill, Chislehurst, Kent, UK, consist of only two parts which fit together like a box and lid. These parts are face panel, silk screen printed on the reverse side and contained in a glass-fibre frame, and a rear body shell containing the fluorescent tubes for illuminating the sign.

Frame and panel are attached by means of a p.v.c. gasket which keeps the sign waterproof but allows a little

air to enter to reduce condensation. Since glass-fibre will withstand tem- peratures up to 250 degrees C and does not shatter if struck even at low tem- peratures, the signs can be used in all climates.

The signs are supplied either with brackets for back fixing or with a post top mounting which allows the post to fit up to 6in. inside the sign.

WATER CLOSET

Pompton is the name given to a new one-piece, low silhouette water closet produced by the Kohler Co., Kohler, Wis., USA.

Its dimensions are 19in. high, 24% in. from front to back and 203⁄41⁄4%in. wide. It is made of vitreous china and may

be installed with its tank partially beneath a dressing table or counter.

Quiet and positive in operation, it has a water area of 111⁄21⁄2in. x 11in, and a 21⁄2in. passageway. Colours available are blue, gold, green, tan, peach and white. Agents are Berents & Associates, Hong Kong, and Atkins Kroll & Co. Inc., Manila.

COMPRESSORS

A range of ten automatic Duplex compressors has been produced for use in pneumatic control systems for heat- ing, ventilating and air conditioning. All models are of the two-stage type and overcome many of the condensa- tion problems encountered in single- stage units by lowering the temperature of the delivered air.

Duplex compressors each feature two full motor-and-compressor assem- blies mounted on a common air re- ceiver, each assembly being controlled by its own pressure switch, wired in conjunction with a stepping relay. When in operation, both compressor plants will pump until the air receiver reaches its working pressure; both as- semblies then cut out automatically.

Further demands are met by each compressor operating alternately, al- though the two will pump in unison to meet a temporary demand for a large volume of air.

The models vary in overall size from 4ft. 6in. by 1ft. 6in. by 3ft. high to 9ft. by 2ft. 8in. by 4ft. 8in. high, and in free-air output from 1.1 to 50 c.f.m.

Motivair Compressors Ltd., Elleray Road, Teddington, Middx., U.K., are the makers.

LIGHTING

The basic unit of the Litex range of extruded lighting fittings is designed for interior or exposed installations. It comprises an aluminium section in a variety of lengths from units accom- modating 12in. 8 watt fluorsecent lamps to 6ft. 85 watt lamps.

The Litex diffuser has a smooth flat surface, ideal for signs or directions. It is moulded from acrylic in the case

of re-entrants, and from impact-resis- tant cabulite for the recessed units. All fittings are power-factor corrected and can be supplied in one or two light units.

The makers are C.M. Churchouse Ltd., Lichfield Road, Brownhills, UK.
