NEW CHURCH, SCHOOL AT NORTH POINT

A

FTER protracted negotiations concerning the site, building operations are to begin shortly on the new parish church of St. Peter's at North Point, and an adjoining school, St. Michael's, for the Chinese Anglican Church in Hong Kong.

The site for the school in Fortress Hill Road. IL 7709, is being granted by the Government, without pre- mium, and the lot for the church, IL 7710. at premium.

St. Peter's will rise in large part because of a gift from the family of the late Mr. Li Tze Fong, who had long hoped for a new parish church in the area. His family have given $220.000 towards the cost of the church, in his memory.

Another $110.000 was raised in 1957 by St. Paul's Church, Glenealy, as part of the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the Bishop of Hong Kong, the Rt. Rev. R.O. Hall. The Episcopal Church of USA gave a grant to meet the cost of the land.

Missionary Society and now ad- ministered by a joint committee with the Chinese Anglican Church.

In his design for the school, the architect, Mr. T.S.C. Feltham, has provided for 24 classrooms, with three practical rooms. The school is to be of six storeys excluding basement.

The ground floor will be occupied by a covered playground, with a stage at one end, and there will be a playground on the roof.

The basement is to be utilised to meet needs for parking and garage accommodation.

The site is on the eastern side of Fortress Hill Road, and runs steeply from King's Road, joining at the upper end with the new Tin Hau Temple Road.

The original site of Fortress Hill Road was a deep valley. It has now been filled in to a certain extent and the new level of Fortress Hill Road is situated some height above the original ground level. In consequence some difficulties are expected with the foundations,

St. Peter's Church is to adjoin and connect with the school. Owing to the steep slope of the road and the ground behind, planning of ac cess presented some difficulty. The problem was solved by a 10 ft. flight of steps giving on to an open vesti bule between the church and the school.

The church will seat a congrega- tion of about 450, including the accommodation provided in a gal- lery. There is provision for a choir and an organ loft.

The construction of the church is a reinforced concrete portal frame, with concrete grilles between the frames.

The back wall of the sanctuary is to be yellow gold mosaic. The altar will be of white marble and there will be a black anodised aluminium cross suspended over the sanctuary.

The basement of the church will house committee rooms, offices, rob- ing rooms for clergy and storage

space.
