principal facades. The outstanding feature, of course, is the emphasizing of structural columns by projection and colour, and extending them above the roof line to be incorporated as a unit of the parapet and side walls.
The elevation is to be inulti-colour- ed, dark enclosing frame contrasting with light colour panels in between. The balcony-like features shown on the perspective are actually laundry hoods. The architect, instead of hid- ing these "unseemly things", has em- ployed them purposely as part of his decorative treatment of the elevation.
The scheme comprises two identical blocks each five storeys in height, and each floor containing ten lats, making a total accommodation for 100 families. Initially, however, only half the pro- ject, i.e., fifty flats, will be built. Each flat is a square unit covering an area of over 510 square feet, which has been divided into two bedrooms, a living room with a kitchen on one side and a bathroom on the other. Each bedroom has a large window, and the living room wall fronting on the verandah passage is practically entirely glazed, there being a large window as well as the double french doors which is the entrance to the flat. The living room is about 110 square feet in area and the bedrooms about 140 square feet each. The basin is outside the bathroom and placed at an enclosed corner off the living room thus enabling other members of the family to use it while the bathroom is occupied.
The access is by an open verandah passageway reached by three open stairways, one at either end of the building and one at the centre.
There is a fall in the ground level along the east-west axis, which is lower at the east end of the building, and the architect has taken advantage of this fact to make a lower ground floor which contains a clubroom. This clubroom is 53'4" by 22'9" and will provide extra recreational facilities for both the young and old. There will al- so be a playground for adults and children.
