A photographic detail of the front of the building.

The entrance hall and stairhall are combined together into one unit of excellent proportion, the stairs, being set in a large square well permitting of wide treads, low risers and ample platforms, lead up in a wide graceful sweep into the upper floor.

The most prominent feature of the arrangement and the design of the house is the huge wide covered verandahs, facing the direction of the view, which stretch the whole width of the front facade. The verandah, on the ground floor, is accessible from the sitting room, the dining room and from an enclosed all-weather verandah placed between the sitting room and the study, and the one on the upper floor, from all the bedrooms.

Formed as part of the sitting room

is a splendid fireplace alcove which forms a cosy nook indeed for small intimate groups during spells of colder weather. The small study on this floor can be isolated from the rest of the house and has a door opening directly on to the entrance hall. The dining room is separated from the sitting room by wide folding doors and, while rather oblong in shape, is of sufficient size to permit fairly large formal dinners The kitchen and pantry unit, of generous size and beautiful appoint- ment, opens directly on to the dining room through

passage-way.

The first floor contains three bedrooms, each with attached bathroom. The master bedroom is of exceptionally large size, with

separate dressing room and separate enclosed verandah for use during inclement weather. The other bedrooms are of more conventional size, but all bathrooms are nicely fitted. In addition to these bedrooms, there is a large hot room on this floor in which clothes, linens, etc., can be taken care of and kept dry during the damp weather. A large cupboard is provided on this floor while one or two closets are also conveniently placed on the ground floor.

The design of the building is rather conventional in style, nicely proportioned but with few outstand- ing features. It is somewhat formal in arrangement and in appearance, but this, no doubt, has been dictated by its requirement as an official residence. To facilitate the entertain- ment of a large number of visitors, the hall, reception room

and verandah were so designed as to permit of easy circulation, and the kitchen and pantry ere built of

than proportionally larger size normally required. Thus, the general arrangement of the building provides all those features required and expected of an official residence, yet retains the comfort and conven- ience of a private home.

Although it is Government building, owing to pressure of work in the Architectural Office at the time, a private firm of architects, Messrs. Leigh & Orange, was commissioned to design it, and the general contractors were Messrs. Lun Sang & Co.
