extensive scheme, announced

by the Government recently, has been designed to improve the present traffic flow in the Central District of Hong Kong Island, particularly at the main traffic bottleneck at the junction of Queen's Road East and Garden Road.

Known as the "Garden Road Com- plex" the scheme covers the area between Harcourt Road and Robin- son Road,

The project is the biggest and most comprehensive road system to be introduced by the Government and forms part of the overall plan for the long-term re-development of the Cen- tral District.

It will be implemented in five stages over the next six years. The estimated cost, based on present rates, is over $12 million.

The new road plans were announc- ed by Mr. W.C. Bell, Chief Engineer (Traffic Engineering) and Mr. A.T. Chief Engineer

The "Garden Road Complex" in- corporates a new road to be called Kapok Drive running in-between the proposed Dockyard East and West Development and extending southwards along the line of the Albany Nullah to join Garden Road just below the Y.W.C.A. building. The nullah is being decked to accom- modate this new road.
