The main street of Sandakan - Second Avenue showing the ty- pical multi-storey reinforced con- crete shophouses which make up the town. Based on a 30 ft. X 50 ft. shoplot, the first floor and above is restricted to 30 ft. X 40 ft., the balance being verandah. Many of these shophouses were designed by architect Parker Kwan of Sandakan.

One of the oldest buildings in present-day Sandakan, a Chinese temple, which was built in the late 1880s, is both built and decorated in traditional Chinese style. The building stands on a small hill over- looking the town's central playing field.
