ental Mansion, at the junction
of King's Road and Cheong Hong Street, North Point, (I.L. 7185) is at present the tallest domestic build ing in Hong Kong. Its 24 storeys will house 280 flats of varying sizes and two penthouses at the top.
The site, which covers 19,500 square feet, rises sharply from the King's Road level. Advantage has been taken of this by the architect. Mr. H.S. Tam, to put the car park- ing space on the second floor, access to which is by ramps rising from the Cheong Hong Street side.
The ground floor is taken up the entrance hall for pedestrians and by shops of various sizes arranged on the street front and in shopping arcades. The first floor will be used either as a restaurant, as offices or as a combination of both. Final decisions about the full use of this floor have not yet been taken.
The large number of flats in the building has called for six high speed lifts which are placed in two banks of three from the ground floor lobby and serving all floors. These will travel at a speed of 400 feet per second against the
more normal speed of 250 feet per second in apartments with fewer floors. They are installed in two groups of three variable voltage lifts in triplex operation. The acceleration and working programme are controlled
