The nave will seat approximately 350 people and in addition verandahs on each side will give additional accommodation to worshippers when the folding doors are opened. These verandahs will also provide weather protection and allow the doors to be open at all times for ventilation.
The choir is placed immediately over the portion of the nave nearest the entrance with two staircases lead. ing to it. This space will accom- modate 100 people and additional space is provided in the triforium.
The sanctuary is of generous pro- portions, measuring 50 feet by 19 feet, exclusive of the platform for the main altar and the steps to the communion rail.
Direct cross-ventilation for all three altars has been devised and the system of doors leading from the sanctuary to the sacristy or to the exterior is arranged so that they are not visible to the congregation.
It is proposed that the baldachino will be incorporated in the structure
of the building. An arch, which also supports the roof, forming a frame to a mosaic panel behind the cross, will give a canopy effect over the main altar.
Two sacristies are provided; they are situated immediately behind the main altar. They are cut off from view from the nave and separate exterior doors will give access with. out going through the main body of the cathedral.
The cathedral will be of reinforc- ed concrete frame construction with concrete arches meeting diagonally. It is a simple form of construction in which the normal cross beams are used as bracing.
A pitched roof will be supported by these concrete arches and a small portion over the front entrance will be in concrete panels which will have the effect of giving a strong and monumental appearance to the facade.
Two solid walls on either side of the entrance walls will be in facing
bricks, above which the high walls will be finished in reconstituted stone. A system of concrete fins and slabs on the two side walls is intend ed to shade the ventilators from the direct sun.
A spire 108 feet high will ensure that the cathedral can be seen from most parts of Kuching. It will be constructed in steel frame and sheathed in copper.
Details of tiling and panelling will depend on the budget available, but it is envisaged that the minimum provisions will include floor tiling of the main aisle and the sanctuary
area.
It is possible that the ground un- der the sacristy end of the cathedral will be excavated so that a lower ground floor can be constructed for parchial and community activities.
Total cost of the new cathedral is estimated to be approximately M$100,000 and money is still be ing collected for the building fund.
