The Institute of Architects of Malaya held their examina- tions for Grade II and I Draughtsmen during December 1949.
32 sets of drawings were submitted for the Senior Series of the Proficiency Examinations held from 5th to 7th December -10 for the Grade II Draughtsmen and 22 for the Grade I Draughtsmen. Of these 5 of the Grade II were from Singapore and 5 from the Federation and 7 of the Grade I were from Singapore and 15 from the Federation. The examination was held simultaneously in Singapore and in Penang, Malacca, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur.
All the papers were examined by the Board in Singapore. The subjects set were:-
Grade II
Grade
-
Working drawings from a 1.16" scale sketch of a block of two storied flats showing drainage and site levelling.
A choice of preparing working drawings from 1-16" scale sketches of a block of flats or a three storied Fire Station.
After the most careful scrutiny the Board were only able to award passes to two candidates, one in the Grade II and one in the Grade I categories-both of the passes were from Singapore.
This is probably the most unsatisfactory result since the examinations were instituted although the percentage of passes in these senior sections has always been low as a very high standard is called for.
The board are concerned at these results and intend to circulate to all candidates some general comments as a guide to their future examinations,
The successful candidates were A. M. Alagoo and F. J. Fernandez, both of Singapore.
The scope of the examination can be judged from the following extract of the examination papers set.
PROBLEM. The Architect under whom you are working has prepared the attached 1 16′′ scale sketch plan for a BLOCK OF FOUR FLATS and it is now passed to you to prepare WORKING CONTRACT DRAWINGS to a scale of eight feet to one inch,
The object of this examination is to enable you to produce your best standard of drawing for CON- TRACT PURPOSES and extra consideration will be given therefore to drawings which can be CLEARLY READ. If you are not quite certain of the intention of the Architect on any point USE YOUR OWN INITIATIVE.
