HONGKONG'S NEWEST BOTTLING

BOTTLING PLANT

HONG KONG HOITRESS

Architect's perspective drawing of the new building

The problem was to design a bottling plant which should meet in every way the high standards required for the pro- duction of Coco-Cola-efficiency in handling and cleanliness within the plant, and a general attractiveness of the building which in itself creates a good advertising medium for the product which is produced within.

Because of the interesting equipment used in the bottling, it was considered essential that the general public passing by should be able to enjoy a view of this equipment in operation, or obtain a close-up view on entering the plant. Due to the fact that ground level is approximately 4'0" below King's Road and the property is cut off from the road by a wide nullah, shown in the cross-section through the building. the floor level of bottling room where the main machinery is located had to be raised to a height sufficient to insure a clear view from the road. It was decided to make use of the space underneath for a large stock room, and this space was obtained by the provision of a half basement.

The floor plans published with this article are liminary study of the plant and modifications of this plan are now being prepared. One of the basic changes is the introduction of an additional floor over the entrance lobby and utility wing, which has been obtained in the adjustment of the various floor levels. Another requirement of the plan was to make possible the construction of the plant in successive stages to parallel the increase in production. Only one bottling unit will be installed when the plant is completed and the space reserved for the second bottling unit will be used either as offices or additional storage room, and the office wing will not be erected for the present as complete facilities for production and control have been provided for in the first instance in the main building. Probably the simplest way to explain the plan would be to imagine a visit to the plant.

As the visitor enters the compound across the bridge constructed over the nullah he drives up to the parking space outside the main entrance. He enters the main lobby in which a space has been reserved for display of coolers and other Coco-Cola equipment (2) and is able to view one of the bottling units in operation through a plate-glass window, A short flight of stairs takes him into the bottling room floor level and strolling down the visitors gallery (15) he is able to observe the bottling units in operation (16). Over the bottle washers he will observe a vent which carries the hot humid air which rises from these units up through the ceilings to the roof. Fresh air will thus be naturally introduced to the bottling room through transoms under the picture windows facing on to King's Road. Leaving the bottling room, he continues upstairs to the first floor on which are located various offices (21 & 25), a small dining room (22), a kitchenette (23) and the syrup room (26) where the Coco- Cola concentrate is mixed with sugar and water in special equipment and fed from here by gravity into the bottling equipment on the floor below. Beyond the offices and syrup room on this floor, space has been reserved for storage of miscellaneous advertising equipment, coolers. etc.

Bulk sup- plies and sugar which will be stored on the ground floor (13) will be lifted to the syrup room by a cargo lift (8), as also will other equipment such as crowns which are also fed into the bottling equipment by gravity from hoppers in the syrup Next to the hoist is a service stair leading down from syrup room to main floor and from there down into the basement. In the basement are located the water purification equipment and carbonators (30) and the steam generators which provides energy and hot water for the operation of the equipment. The remainder of the basement (33) is for storage of empty bottles and cases not immediately required. Main storage of bottles and cases is provided in the stock

room.
