Amongst the recently completed buildings is one which is of special interest since it was designed and built for himself by one of our leading architects. This house is of the bungalow type, situated on a more than un- usually difficult hillside site on Repulse Bay Road, and a considerable amount of retaining wall was required in order to provide a fair amount of lawn area. As will be seen from the site plan, the house was set in the centre of the lot facing due south. This arrangement allows for a very comfortable car access up a rather steep access road, but with ample level space to turn and park several cars.
The bungalow itself has been built in two sections, which are divided, yet connected, by the main entrance hall in the centre. The sitting-dining room section is on the right hand side as one enters the hall, the combined rooms being of most pleasant dimensions. Access to the service quarters are by means of an almost concealed doorway off the dining room, through the pantry which, while making this necessary appendage to the house accessible to the house when required, removes all suggestion of its presence at other times. An L-shaped loggia- patio surrounding the southern and eastern walls of the sitting room forms an unusual and very clever adjunct to this important room, as it provides an enormous shaded area without appreciably detracting from the brightness and airiness of the room. The view through the hall window as one enters the house is an ex- ceptionally attractive one and is due almost entirely to this arrangement of the loggia.
