No. 524 The Peak-Coombe Road,

A photograph of the bungalow which is set on a small spur above Coombe Road. The building is partially obscured by an elevation in the foreground.

When the design of small private residence is being con- sidered, one of the first and most important question that arises is whether it is to be a bungalow type or a two-storied building. This is very often just a matter of taste, as some people prefer the informality and convenience of having all rooms on one floor at garden level, whilst others feel that having the living rooms downstairs and the bedrooms on the upper floor makes for better planning and gives more privacy.

However, it cannot be gainsaid that the two-story build- ing,

for the equal accomodation provided, is more economical in space, as the staircase, the stairhalls and, very often, extra corridors have to be provided for.

The ideal design, therefore, is usually a bungalow, for economy, but with the rooms planned so that the dining room and sitting rooms, which comprise the living area, are in one unit and the bedrooms as another unit, separated and dis- tinct from the former.

There was recently completed on Coombe Road for the Manager of Singer Sewing Machine Company a bungalow consisting of five main rooms which is a model of compact- ness and convenience.

The house was designed to utilise a rather limited area to the full. The living room and dining room have been combined into one, although separated by a difference of 6′′ in floor level, resulting in a room of a total length of 41′0′′. Ample light is provided for this area by making the circular wall at the south end of the living room and the west wall of the dining room almost entirely window.

The bedrooms, of which there are three, face southeast. The master bedroom is 16′0′′ X 17′0′′ with its attached bath- room, the other two bedrooms are 14′0′′ X 15′0′′ with a bath- room between. Built-in cupboards are provided for each bedroom.
