Comparative designs of eva- porative condensers are shown by means of these two diagrams. That on the left shows the new style condenser which uses a dry fan to blow air through the coils, whilst the old style con- denser on the right, a larger and clumsier machine, draws the air through it.

The following are the design objectives laid down by Refrigeration Engineering Inc., Los Angeles, for an evaporative condenser of modern design. (See drawing above).

1.

2.

3.

4.

Corrosion and scaling of the fan must be prevented. The eliminator should be easily accessible for inspection and cleaning.

Panels must be easily removed to permit access to all parts of the condenser.

All panel joints must be water-tight without the use of gaskets or sealing compounds.

5. The unit should have rounded corners and a gener-

ally pleasing appearance.

6. The water bleed arrangement should be simple,

positive and proof against tampering.

7. De-superheating coils and sub cooling coils should

be available when desired as extras.

Explanation of the last two points would need much extra space and is therefore omitted.

The new "Dri Fan" Recold evaporative condenser serves all refrigeration and airconditioning equipment, being manufactured up to 100 tons capacity in single units, both as evaporative condensers and as mechanical draft towers. Both can be used as indoor installations with proper ducting for fresh air intake and saturated air dis- charge, or simply installed outside in the open air.

It is worth while to mention that an evaporative con- denser will work to a small percentage of its capacity with- out water as an air-cooled condenser, though it is not advia- able to use it without adding small quantities of water.
