THE HONG KONG AND FAR EAST BUILDER
outdoor temperature. Taking the average summer tem. perature in Hong Kong ** 25 degrees F., we obtain a 20 degree F. degree day. In the winter, taking an average of 341 degrees F. we obtain a 15 degree F. degree day.
From the above it seems that the Hong Kong climate is exceedingly suitable for this kind of heating proposition.
Heat for our so-called "heat pump" can be obtained from the outside air, from well-water or from the earth itself, and accordingly different systems have been developed, being called the air-to-air, air-to-water etc. system.
Imi- provements in refrigerating machinery and experiments. on a large scale on the various systems will soon open a wide field of application. It applies to small houses AS well as to big industrial installations. In Switzerland, for example, one big installation is using river water as the source of heat. Many big installations were erected in recent yesus in C.S.A. and full scale experiments will result in the production of self-contained packaged units for summer cooling and winter heating. Some of them are already obtainable of which the best are the "air-to-air” systems avoiding the employment of water, which is some- times difficult to obtain. These units are built in 3. 5. 71 and 10 ton units.
In Hong Kong, where outdoor temperatures in winter never go near freezing, the following system could be worked out. Suppose we freeze one pound of water of 55 degrees F. temperature, the following heat gains can be expected. Sensible heat gain 55 degrees F. minus 32 degrees F. which equals 23 degrees F.. giving 23 B.T.U's. The latent heat of fusion, ie. to freeze one pound of water at 32° F. to ice at 32° F. is 144 B.T.U's. This gives us a total of 167 B.T.U's realized in producing one pound of ice. Suppose we need 30,000 B.T.U's per hour, we have to produce 30,000- 167 - 175 pounds of ice. To do this we need, say, one 3 H.P. condensing unit. After this quantity of ice is produced we obtain our 30,000 B.T.U's in fact more) of heat, which we can utilize for heating purposes in our abode. The ice we produce can be thrown in the sea or it can be put in some sort of receptacle kept in the open air, where it melts, drawing the necessary heat from the air, and can be used over again. This would be an indirect “air-to-air" system. Try it out.
